Ran a 90km trail run on the weekend. Took HJ 15mins before start and again every 2.5-3hrs. Felt awesome and full of energy all day and finished in second place with a time of 11:10. 6th quickest time ever recorded.
I found that I didn't seem to need as much food as normal. Took the HJ with water and GU. Tasted good and I noticed an energy boost shortly after which lasted for about 90mins.
I think I will order some more to try on other long endurance runs/rides.

Holy Crap! Great run!
How much do you weigh? I bet there's a correlation between body size and dosage required.

I am 174cm and weigh 77kg (~170lb) so not the lightest runner out there.
Out of interest here is a list of all that I ate/drank on the run. I was overhydrated at the start and maintained optimum hydration levels throughout the day.
2 hours prior to the run:
2 English muffins with PB&J on one and honey on the other
1 Coffee
600mL Gatorade (drank to start)
15-30mins prior:
1 Coffee
1 HJ
300mL water
During run:
2 sandwiches - vegemite and PB&J
1 packet salt and vinegar chips (100cals)
3 GU's
3 packets of HJ
1 Oreo bar (~100cals)
1 Snickers
1litre Coke
600mL Gatorade
3-4litres of water
After run:
Had 2 Up'n'Gos, biscuits and water (800cals) immediately after the run.
I alternated between taking liquid nutrition (HJ and Gu's) with solids (sandwiches, chips, etc) during the run which worked out well for me. |

brandenh - great run wow 6th place ever - way too cool. I have never used HJ more than once in a workout but I think I will try it for the next big workout see what happens. It seems like I have energy all day as it is using only one time.

It's the vegemite sandwiches dude...not the HJ! Congrats on a good race brandenh!

Wow, very impressive, congrats! I'm curious, what were you thinking of beforehand for your expected finishing time?

Having never run longer than 45km before I wasn't sure I would even make the distance in good shape. Openly expected to run 12-13 hours but quietly I thought I might be able to run sub-12 hours. If I had more experience and confidence I probably would have gone sub-11 hours which is a very good tiime. My split for the first half to Jenolan Caves was only 17mins off the time I did in the race on the same course in March of this year. On the return loop I only added an hour to the second 45km. Finished feeling like I could have kept on going but the feet had suffered a little over the last hour.
Moonpie: vegemite sandwiches rock with secret Australian ultrarunning nutrition qualities.
I am not placing any one thing on a successful run but am interested in being able to repeat the performance on further occassions hence HJ may become a regular addition to my nutrition program. Need to keep these things in mind while training for my first 100miler. |

Took the HJ before two open water swims this weekend and PR's both of them. Damn boys. The first was a 1miler at 24.35 and the second was a 2 miler in 51. Sweet! |

Marathon PB (4:05:38) fuelled by HJ! Actually, it was my first marathon
One serving of HJ an hour before the Ottawa ING Marathon and then sipped one serving during the run. I was trying to mimic my planned HIM nutrition plan of 300 cal/hr but I found that I wasn't very hungry; I forced myself to down a few Hammer gels out of fear of bonking.

What does Hornet Juice actually taste like?

Yeah, it seems to have a delayed reaction for me, too. I took it at 2 hours into my ride and really started to feel it at 3:15. Took it before my big two hour run and didn't feel it all that much, but then was bouncing off the walls for my second 40 minute run a few hours later in the day. And that was after nearly killing myself on the first run. Weird, weird, weird. Oh yeah, then I had trouble falling asleep, even though I worked out about 9.5 hours in two days.

Hmmm, after listening to that vm, well, in my defense I was up for a day and a half when I called in. The real reason my ride felt so great I think had more to do with a 25 mph tail wind and less with the hj.
What I have noticed with the hj though is that I experience much less muscle fatigue a workout. I also feel a little stronger towards the middle of a workout after taking it, which may mean I need to drink it earlier.
I wish it didn't taste so strongly, I could do a blind test and see if the effect is real or placebo, but there is no mistaking a drink mixed with hj.
I find for me that mixing it with a sweet sports drink has a better taste. So far my favorite combo is with mango gatorade, it actually makes the gatorade less sweet and I prefer that flavor with the hj as opposed to without it.

Since I am the resident "testor" for hornet juice I have had two weeks to evaluate so here it goes..It doesnt seem to have any front loaded positive effect..No different then gatorade..There is one positive I have seen..It speeds up recovery..In essence I am not as sore/spent the next day..So I guess that alone is worth the money..tim
And this report is coming from a guy with a titanium rod in his spine who ran last year's ING NYC Marathon with two broken legs!

if you'd rather eat egg and cheese on a roll in peace, then you're going to get fat, you'll have no energy, and your knee will hurt.

You could still do a blind test, you'd just have to do it with someone who had never tried HJ before. I've been thinking about trying that myself this fall since I'm skeptical but intrigued about the HJ Hype.
If a blind test WERE done, any suggestions on how to frame the test and measure results?

for one really long run, give them the HJs. for another, give them turkey feces mixed with charcoal. They'll go for the better tasting one, making HJ the loser.

Where does one find a blind person to run these tests? I guess the objective of the test would be to see if HJ really does cure blindness, as texafornicator claims?
